New Details on Nintendo's Wii U

New details have been announced about the Wii U during Nintendo's prE3 conference today at 03:00 PM (PDT) including the new hardware design, software features, and network connectivity. Nintendo's pretty much at a speeding start to E3 with this new presentation.

The new controller design pretty much confirms the leaked photo of a redesign. Instead of the slider controls, Nintendo has decided that that was more effective for the space efficient portable consoles and has now decided to go with the more traditional analog sticks. Also the back of the controller has been given a gripping area for where you can hold firmly and ergonomically. New built-in features to the controller have been shown including the ability to press the analog sticks as buttons, an NFC reader/writer for games that may card and figures and a TV control button that allows you to control your TV from the comfort of your touch screen. No information yet though on the specifics of the hardware including the processing power and the disc media type to be used. Though based on the presentations of the previous year, we can hope to expect that Nintendo is in the HD generation of games.

You'll also be able to use different controllers such as the Wii Remote, Nunchuck Controller, Wii Balance Board, and the newly announce Wii U Pro Controller, which works similarly to more traditional controllers. It looks like Nintendo is trying to regain the confidence of the hardcore crowd.

The main intent of the whole teaser was to introduce to us something new and unheard of before. Nintendo has been pretty tight lipped before today about the software features of the system. Sure we saw the ability to flick your YouTube video towards the screen, but Nintendo has made something even more palatable and solves the problem of "Alone Together" by creating more social interaction between gamers.

I am of course referring to the newly announced Miiverse, a portmanteau word of  "Mii" and "Universe". The social hub of course features the ability to see people in a plaza represented by their Miis. This shows what the community is currently playing and what they're talking about. You can also jump into the social hub in and out of game making it easier to communicating. With the touchscreen the, typing out messages is easier plus the ability to select your mood is a bonus feature to replace the ever so used smilies with your Mii actually conveying the expression. Miiverse can actually be used only with your gamepad like a tablet where you can check for update with. Miiverse also hosts competition and connectivity with other players in or out of game, or at the same time or at different times. Nintendo also plans to release other Miiverse related applications on browsers or mobile devices. Though it won't be available at launch, it will be a refreshing way to experience gaming in front of the TV or not.

Miiverse Forums
The Nintendo Network will also be the new standard of network connectivity for Nintendo so expect games, videos, and graphics to be distributed through this network. Video chat will be supported using the webcam included in the Wii U Gamepad. Plus the Wii U Gamepad will be able to use an internet browser on its touchscreen and on the TV if desired.

Miiverse Plaza

Nintendo's main focus for this console is obviously connectivity. Taking the simple friend list into a combined, social plaza, forum, video chat device, and gaming network. The Nintendo Network and Miiverse will prove to be a new way of interacting with people from all over the world. More details will be revealed on Tuesday at their complete E3 presentation.
